Our aim is to create a new building which will secure the future of Scouting in Consett and be an asset to the local community, providing facilities which can be used by all.
We have considered several options, and after much consideration of the best and most realistic options we have decided to go for a modular building.
The building will have a steel frame with concrete panels for the external walls and timber cladding on the front.
This method of construction is very cost effective, at around half the cost of a conventional building, and is also very versatile.
Other features of the building will be accessible toilets, a second hall and a seating / reception area.
These facilities will allow the Group to continue to grow, with enough space to run more than one section each night.
They will also provide the local community with affordable facilities which can be used by local groups and families.
A key feature is that the building will be on the site of the existing headquarters. The central location of this site, and the grassed area around the building are ideal for our purposes and we are unlikely to find such a good site any where else.
The cost of this building is still very high, at £200,000. We are already fund raising, but our own efforts will never be enough to meet that target. The majority of the money will come from grant giving trusts and donations.
The walls will be insulated and the windows double glazed, and we are looking at an Air Source Heat Pump to provide the heating. This should make the building cheaper to run, and more energy efficient, than our current building, despite its extra size.
The building will be 29 metres long by 8.4 metres wide, around 75% larger than our current building.
